Every summer, I try to have a theme for what I read. Not intentionally. I usually ignore my ‘I’m going to read THIS during the summer’ lists I came up with for the past couple of years. So this summer, I decided to try the great list of books I should have read in high school but didn’t because they were assigned to the lower level courses (why? I don’t know).
There are two books that I primarily want to read:
Catch-22 by Joseph Heller and Lord of the Flies by William Golding.
Now, I’ve managed to start Catch-22. I’m about a third of the way through and am finding it quite funny. I am glad that I didn’t read it in high school–the humor probably would have gone over my head.
I probably should take on some more Shakespeare, and do want to read The Count of Monte Cristo. I also need to finish Ninety-Three, but that’s unconnected to former high school reads.
Other ones that should be on the list: more Austen (no thanks), Jane Eyre (again, no thanks), A Tale of Two Cities and more stuff I can’t recall.
And I do think I ought to reread To Kill a Mockingbird.

I know you do. But would you rather I complain about reading the Janes or delight in reading the Count of Monte Cristo?

I started reading Catcher in the Rye a couple of weeks ago, but found Holden’s voice too obnoxious for my taste. I’ll try reading it again, but for now, I’m putting it aside.

Not a fan of Austen and Catch-22 would have rocked in high school.

I know! Though, I’m glad that I’m reading Catch-22 now rather than in high school–I can’t think of any book that’s had me laughing so much, but I wouldn’t have found it funny then.
That was the problem with being in an advanced English class. We got saddled with 19th century classics, while the other classes got to read Vonnegut and Heller.

I like rereading books that were assigned back in school. It’s always interesting to me to see which ones I now appreciate that I didn’t back then. Or vice versa.

I should get ahold of my old reading list…I wish I could remember all of the books I had to read. I distinctly remember hating The Grapes of Wrath, Candide and Animal Farm. I wonder if I’ll like them any more now…
